Our Values
Lighting Fires has a set of values we strive to live by. It is a way of doing life and being church. Our vision is for every Lighting Fires group to share and uphold these values so that the name of Jesus will be glorified and HIS Kingdom advanced
Jesus Centred
Everything we say and do is centred around Jesus and what he achieved on the cross for us. Jesus isn’t just an add-on to our favourite pet doctrine, he is the cornerstone of our our faith. We seek to be more Christlike in everything we do and ensure that Jesus remains our central focus and first love.
(Ephesians 2:20-22) (Revelation 2:4)
Word & Spirit
We believe the Holy Spirit moves in power today and the gifts of the Spirit are for today. We actively seek to live in the power of the Holy Spirit and we welcome his presence into our lives and into our meetings. The Bible is foundational to our faith and we believe it is essential to be grounded in sound doctrine and biblical truth to live an effective Christian life. We are not to be people who are easily deceived and swayed around by every wind of doctrine that comes along but are instead anchored to the word of God.
(Ephesians 4:14)
Priesthood of all believers
We believe it is the responsibility of all believers to hear from God and to contribute to the church body with their gifts and talents, especially when we gather together (1 Corinthians 14:26). It is not the responsibility of “professional Christians” such as pastors, teachers, evangelists, apostles and prophets alone to minister, those who hold these offices are there to equip the church for works of ministry (Ephesians 4:11-13). We believe everybody contributes, everybody has a voice and everybody can minister. We are all priests unto God and do not require a man or woman to mediate between us and God.
(1 Peter 2: 9) (Revelation 1:6) (1 Timothy 2:5)
Disciples that make disciples
Jesus said “Go into all the world and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28: 19-20). Our vision is for a missional, outward-looking family of believers, seeking to disciple people and then release them to disciple others. It is not our vision for Lighting Fires groups to be cosy “holy huddles” where Christians hide away from the world, but rather, vibrant families of believers who immerse themselves as “salt and light” in their communities and culture bringing God’s presence wherever they go.
Worship in spirit and truth
Jesus said “But the time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks” (John 4:23). God is looking for those who authentically engage with their spirit and their heart when they worship. They are not just going through the motions or looking for the praise of man, they are completely consumed by the Holy Spirit and engaged when they worship as their spirit communes with God. They are singing and declaring words of truth into the atmosphere and they mean every word from their heart. It can never be said of them “They honour me with their lips but their hearts are far from me:”
(Matthew 15:8)
Family of believers
A real family, connected and committed to each other through the good times and the bad. Not just Sunday morning acquaintances but true life friends who are there for each other every day when it matters. We would encourage diverse groups of different ages, ethnic backgrounds and situations in life. Committed to each other in prayer and dedicated to encouraging one another to grow in character and faith. Quick to forgive and reconcile, slow to anger.
Non Hierarchical
There is no top-down leadership, only mutual respect for others in the group. Those who lead are recognised for their humility, wisdom, good example, character, maturity and anointing. Leaders seek to serve first and follow the example of the ultimate leader, Jesus Christ.
Authentic and real
Non-religious, real and authentic. No man-made rituals or rules. Keeping things simple: a family on a mission together, being real with each other, worshipping, learning, and eating together. No “Sunday mask” or “Sunday best”. Just come as you are.
No celebrities
No “Christian celebrities’ or special guest preachers. Simply a community of Christians gathered together in a home to worship Jesus and see His kingdom come on earth.
